The Sake Spritzer

Sake is most commonly served neat, but the possibilities on how you can enjoy it are endless.

On the more adventurous and historical side, you have fugu no hirezake, a rarely served beverage of charred puffer-fish fin (yes you read that correctly) steeped in hot sake. Traditionally consumed in the winter months, this drink is high in umami, and offers a more savoury, broth-like alcoholic drink. Whilst definitely not a particularly popular sake combination, it has warranted titles online of “Japan’s Weirdest Hot Saké Drink?” alongside the “Deadliest Cocktail in the World". We shall let you decide whether or not it’s worth a try.

If that doesn’t quite appeal, seasoned-enjoyers have found that pouring a sake with rich and pronounced notes over a few coffee ice cubes works wonders. A future blog post will cover this in more detail, if this has piqued your interest.

Today however, we are talking about a simple yet iconic drink with a refreshing twist this summer: the sake spritzer. We can assure you, this drink won’t contain any unexpected surprises.

Recipe & Measurements:

60ml Sake (a flavourful sake is preferred to ensure the tasting notes aren’t suppressed. We recommend our deliciously juicy Iwate Homare Junmai Ginjo as it works perfectly for this style!)

30 ml Soda Water (Coast is our favourite, with a touch of Japanese sea salt to enhance the flavours)

Ice cubes

Fruit garnish of your choice

Dozo!

Whether relaxing on a picnic blanket with a book in hand, or hosting an event with friends, this effortless yet refreshing sake spritzer is sure to enhance those summer vibes! If you follow our recipe, let us know what you think, or tag us via our Instagram @drinkmaisake!
