Pairing Sake with Halloween Movies
What’s your favourite scary movie? The time is almost here, to dust off the cauldrons and plastic spiders, and indulge in spooky festivities (or switch the lights off and hide away from the trick-or-treaters).
Whether you are an avid horror movie fan or prefer a fun, magical film to watch curled up on the couch, there’s nothing quite like a cosy night in with a nostalgic Halloween movie!
To truly get into the spirit of Halloween, we have decided to shake it up and select a few of the most iconic seasonal films, pairing them with our sake in terms of characteristics and personality.
So without further ado, let’s discuss the sake and Halloween film combos:
Hocus Pocus
You can’t go wrong starting with this one. Magical, colourful, bubbly and fun, with playful vibrancy both on the screen and palate, our Sparkling Rosé fits the bill. We cannot promise that this bubbling brew will offer ‘youth-regaining’ properties, but may invoke some sweet nostalgia, with hints of strawberries and apples. Serve up in your favourite chalice (we recommend a champagne flute) and enjoy this witchy film with this iconic sake!
Scream
The Scream franchise is known for the memorable phone call scene at the beginning of the movie, as the notorious killer converses with an unsuspecting Casey Becker (Drew Barrymore). The antagonist's smooth voice and dry sense of humour would pair well with our Ultra Dry Junmai. Looks can be deceiving, and serving this sake at different temperatures can reveal various complex characteristics hidden behind its black-and-white mask (or label).
Beetlejuice
This wild, crazy, horror comedy shares characteristics in many ways with our Iwate Homare Junmai Ginjo. The Mai sake choice is also the perfect mixture of ancient tradition and modernity, similar to the revival of the striped suit-wearing entity. Iwate Homare Junmai Ginjo uses one of the oldest styles of brewing technique, alongside the oldest accessible yeast strain in the world of sake, but possesses an energetic vibrancy of flavour due to the techniques used. From the hint of zingy ‘spritz’ upon opening, to the flash of green on the label, this expressive and easy-to-drink sake pairs perfectly with the eccentric nature of this holiday film. And you won’t have to say the name of our sake three times to get hold of a bottle!
Halloween
When it comes to the Halloween slasher movie, you need to be on your toes at every moment. Our Akamon truly fits the bill, with a moreish balance of acidity and juiciness, every sip will take you by surprise (much like the notorious antagonist Michael Myers). Our choice of sake here has a long-lasting finish, similar to the penultimate chase scenes of the film, and as with the ‘final girl’ Laurie Strode (portrayed by Jaime Lee Curtis) the lively characteristics of this sake packs a punch.
Blair Witch Project
The shaky camera footage, constant tension and unsettling sense of dread? You’re going to need something stronger than sake for this one - might we suggest a Shochu Martini, using our Samurai Villa Shochu? Should help you with the jump scares…!
